I have been teaching at Brigham Young University since 2007. Before coming to BYU, I taught and tutored at Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, Florida. I earned my MA in American literature, specifically focused on autoethnography and the influence of Native American storytelling tradition on the emerging genre. Most of my presentations and publications, however, have been on Jewish-American literature and Mormon literature.
I consider myself a full-time parent and a part-time teacher. My four children are continually helping me grow, but diapers and dishes differ greatly from classroom discussion. Both jobs are rewarding and intellectually stimulating, but teaching provides opportunities to apply my educational and professional skills.
The class I primarily teach is English 312, persuasive writing. I enjoy the diversity of students in my classes, whose majors range from sociology to biology, communications to exercise science, pre-law to pre-med, family life to physics. Class discussions tend to be lively and unexpected; students enjoy expressing opinions and discovering the power of a well-turned argument. My curriculum is centered around the enthymeme, a rhetorical syllogism that generates arguments based on audience values.
Enjoy exploring this teaching portfolio. I will occasionally add new materials, so be sure to come back.
